TALK SUMMARY

Hi to fellow friends,

We meet again in this column and at this time I want to share what I got from the talk lecture series by Mrs. Sheriffah Noor Khamseah Al-Idid binti Dato’ Syed Ahmad Idid from Nuclear power Division, Malaysia Nuclear Agency, Bangi and Mr. Azrudy from TNB Nuclear Unit.

Our first speaker is Mrs. Sheriffah Noor Khamseah Al-Idid binti Dato’ Syed Ahmad Idid. From what she explained, lots of knowledge we get and let says before this we don’t know about nuclear fact, we just got from her explanation.

His title talk series is Global Overview of Nuclear Power Programme (NPP).

So, let me summarize this lecture series to give you an easy way to understand. From 1850 until now, there a lot of energy uses in our life. Coal, oil, gas, and lately nuclear have been uses as the energy source. But, until year 2015 oil remains the dominant energy source. From Mr. Nabuo Tanaka qoute, Executive Director, International Energy Agency (IEA), he stated that the current energy that we used is unsustainable. Therefore, it does will affect the global warming and can give the effect to the people.

With the oil price always unstable and sometimes price are high give the big impact to us. So, we need to find the solution to find the green energy sources. So, nuclear are the green energy that we find?? For your information, uranium with fast breeder reactors have lifetime energy resources is higher with more than 3000 years we can uses with coal is 155 years and gas with 65 years only.

Remove to other part which is status of nuclear power as the end of 2009. This part is very important for me because we can know how much country uses nuclear as their energy sources and how many countries to follow this step. For whom who know, let me tell you that 30 countries(436 nuclear power plants) already have nuclear power plant and it’s generate about 15% of world energy electricity and will be more increase year by years. From these 30 countries, many of them use PWR (Pressurized Light-Water-Moderated and Cooled Reactor) as the reactor types.

From the Yukiya Amano, Director-General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), more than 60 countries are interested in exploring nuclear energy. From his speech, he stated that “Nuclear power is accepted by an increasing number of countries as a stable, safe and clean source of energy. The growing attractiveness of nuclear power is due to a number of factors. They include its strong performance and safety records, now totaling more than 14,000 reactor-years; nuclear power´s very low greenhouse gas emissions; surging global energy demand; and concern about energy security”. So, let’s consider this green energy sources as our country energy sources. Can you support that??

Before I finish my summarization, I am very attracted to Mr. Azrudy speech about how to save our Earth on green environment? We support electric car as to save the earth but the electric car uses energy from hydro for example which release carbon dioxide to our environment. So, how to save our environment? Therefore, let’s uses nuclear energy as sources because its green energy and no carbon dioxide are released.

Hello……
We come back again…..Now I will explain about  what I hear during second talk today…The talk discuss about “Nuclear goes green”…

Can you think how different the world would be today if 40 years ago we had replaced all fossil fuel with nuclear power? There would be no power shortages. Our electrical bill would be a fraction of what it is. We would be driving cars powered by hydrogen and nobody would be worrying about global warming...

Since the Chernobyl disaster, many people think badly about nuclear. But now many people are talking about nuclear and advantages. Now, a lot of research was done to build a nuclear power plant. Nuclear is good because they are good at building weapons and powering cities for the benefit of man-kind. The buildings are good to because they are tall and if there is a big explosion, no one gets hurt.

Scared of nuclear power? Well think again.

Nuclear Power has a higher safety record than any other major industrial technology. It’s clean, safe, economical and environmentally sound, and allows us to desalinate our water, end hunger and poverty, and turn our wastelands into Gardens of Eden. Nuclear power has more than just a little greenhouse gas attached to it, when mining uranium are, refining and enriching fuel, building the plant, and operating it are included.

Nuclear Power also can help us end our dependence on oil, thereby lessening terrorism and our need to engage in oil-based wars. Nuclear Power is the key to reversing global warming. Find out what really happened at Three Mile Island and how despite the media hype, Chernobyl was simply a one-in-a-million occurrence. Environmentalists have distorted the facts and brought down the nuclear industry. Society must be prepared to again bring nuclear power to the forefront, or the human race may not survive the 21st century.

Do you know a typical pellet of uranium weighs about 7 grams can generates how much energy?
For your information, it can generates as much energy as 3.5 barrels of oil, as much as 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas and as much energy as 1,780 pounds of coal…

Now, you can feel it’s nuclear is green or not…Think carefully…

There is no doubt that Malaysia would one day turn to the use nuclear energy. However, that will still take years. So, Malaysia should still look into other alternative sources of energy rather than focusing too much on nuclear energy.

I spotted an interesting point in this statement, I quote
"uranium with fast breeder reactors have lifetime energy resources is higher with more than 3000 years we can uses with coal is 155 years and gas with 65 years only.
" end quote.

So Nuclear energy even though it is expensive, it is sustainable as future generation for the next 3000 years or so are catred for

Hey there. If a typical pellet of uranium weighs about 7 grams can produce that kind of energy, how about 1 kilogram of uranium-235? 1 kilogram of uranium-235 can produce up to 80 terajoules of energy, that is almost equal to the amount of energy produce by the atomic bomb(Fat Boy) which blew up Nagasaki, Japan during World War 2. Imagine how much natural resources Malaysia able to save for the future! We need to speed up as our natural resources wont hold on much longer.

But even if nuclear energy is Green, the public might not feel the same because they are not us as we are the one that deal with nuclear and understand nuclear energy better. Nuclear waste most probably be the main concern of the public.

Thank You.

hi,
I think people should not be afraid of nuclear power. If the nuclear power is truly dangerous why there are 30 countries having nuclear power plant and still keeping on building it?
The accident at chernobyl caused by
unauthorized systems test is a disaster but same goes for oil spill problem and oil plant explosions such as On March 23, 2005, a fire and explosion occurred at BP's Texas City Refinery killed 15 men.

Accident may happen but, the safety aspects has been studied and improved and being used by advances country such as France. Malaysia should be brave and follow the foot steps of the advanced country which will give brighter future the people and also to the environment. Thank JIVITHAN A/L KANDEEBAN me083555

Nowadays, the nuclear industry remains controversial. The controversies are often linked to irrational fear. The advantages of this energy source are recognised: the power available, the competitive price of the electricity produced, the ability to produce electricity without greenhouse gas emissions .But still nuclear energy frightens people and the management of radioactive waste is worrying. Some countries have declared, under pressure from public opinion, that they will close down their nuclear reactors.this should not happen as we must let the public aware of the benefits and how they can save our future crisis.

I strongly agree that the Chernobyl was simply a one-in-a-million occurrence. That is why we must educate our people. Many Malaysians are very skeptical on this issue. If our government were to consider building a nuclear plant in this country, many things must be taken into consideration like logistic, budget and effects. It would be a major challenge but in the long term it would benefit our next generation...

hi...
Nuclear power is renewable. Many environmental groups are fundamentally opposed to the notion that nuclear power is a renewable form of energy — on the grounds that it produces harmful waste byproducts and relies on extractive industries to procure fuel like uranium.

Even so, the nuclear industry and pro-nuclear officials from countries including France have been trying to brand the technology as renewable, on the grounds that it produces little or no greenhouse gases. Branding nuclear as renewable could also enable nuclear operators to benefit from some of the same subsidies and friendly policies offered to clean energies like wind, solar and biomass.

Byproduct or disposal waste of nuclear energy is what I'm concerned with. This lethal waste will have to be managed safely for several decades or even hundred of years. If medieval man had exposed to nuclear energy first before us, we today would still be burdened with managing his nuclear waste. This is not a legacy we should be leaving for future generations of Malaysians.

Nice conversation over here, lots of info and good points. In my point of view anyway, most of the developed countries already had nuclear reactors in their land and so do some developing countries. Economy wise-it could generates investments. Politically, this is something about status.Asia powerhouse and world's rising economy giants, China and India already took the stepping stone. Take a look at our neighbors, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam. As reported, they will have at least one much more earlier than us, Malaysia. Are we going to ponder the nuclear reactor issues and keep falling behind staring at our up-surging proud neighbors? I'd rather not.

if we see nw,in Malaysia, charcoal are the highest percentage used in Malaysia to produce electricity..charcoal are harmful to health n environment!!
so by using nuclear,we can save a lot and n can prevent the world by various of gaseous..
this is because, the nuclear energy is proven much more clean,n safe..
so our government need 2 to do a lot research to apply it in Malaysia..

from what i understand in the lectures, nuclear power is truly a green energy, because the core fission in the nuclear reactor actually doesn't produce co2, the emission of co2 from nuclear power is actually contributed by the process of mining the uranium itself........

Nuclear has big advantages for its low emission in carbon and can sustain for a very long period. But, remember the main problem for nuclear technologies, its waste. Nuclear waste is such a big problem as it is radioactive which is highly dangerous. Below are some scientist suggestions on how to dispose nuclear waste.

1. Deep down in the earth.
2. Arctic region.
3. Seabed.
4. Space.

The top three are voted the best solutions to dispose nuclear waste but the fourth is the least because it require extremely high cost and the future of it is still unknown.

Nuclear can someday become the main energy source to the world as it is the green technology. However, did we all think of the nuclear radiation itself? Even workers at the nuclear reactor will be exposed with nuclear radiation everyday. It will be harmful to the workers even though they followed the safety precaution. This is a very good energy sources but should be research and develop more about the safetyness.

indeedm nuclear power is evironmental sound and it will help malaysia to be greener but can malaysia bare the cost to create these power plants to support the population in malaysia?. we should not forget that a strategic place is required to build these power plants. nuclear waste also has to be counted. we cant dispose nuclear waste just like that. Therefore.. so many things has to be considered to build a power plant, and its gona take many more years for malaysia to live with nuclear power. cheers.
